MTSS Tier 1 - All students

Tier 1 is one of the essential components of the MTSS framework. It is the core program in which all students receive high-quality, evidence-based instruction. Generally, academic and behavioral instruction and support are designed and differentiated for all students. Tier 1 instruction incorporates the core academic curriculum aligned with state standards. The core program intends to deliver high-quality education to all students with the expectation of meeting grade-level standards and preparedness for the future. The expectation is to have approximately 80 percent of students in Tier 1 meet learning targets.

First Steps:

  • Identify presenting behavior and determine underlying causes.

  • Actively teach and reinforce classroom rules.

  • Teach and reinforce new skills to create a positive classroom environment.

  • Consider the role of personal bias in your disciplinary decisions. (Ex. Are you disciplining girls, minorities, students with disabilities, or any other group at a high rate?)

School-Wide Positive Reinforcement Systems

  • Faculty culture of 4 positives to 1 negative

Think of it like this: “Good morning, Jamarcus.” (positive #1) “Great job getting that done, Jamarcus.” (positive #2) “Yes, that’s correct, excellent job, Jamarcus.” (positive #3) “I heard you guys won last night, Jamarcus!” (positive #4) “Jamarcus, you’ve got to stop talking to Tasha all the time!” (negative #1)

A balance of communication with your students, so for every negative or redirecting comment delivered, he or she has already heard four positive comments from you.

School-Wide Rewards

  • Fish Tank: All School Bucks used in the store will be dumped into the school-wide Fish Tank. The whole school will receive a reward when the tank is filled to each level.
